HALA
Los Angeles, California
2025

Created in collaboration with the Los Angeles based Eastern European women's choir, Nevenka Folk Ensemble, HALA is a contemporary ode to folkloric culture. The Hala are wind spirits in Bulgarian folk stories who bring storms and misfortune. When the Hala grow hungry, they will try to eat the sun, explaining the origin of the eclipse.

HALA asks about the origins of our light and darkness, how we've made sense of mystery in the world and in ourselves across the history of traditional culture.

HALA looks to new corporeal forms of myth making, combining folkloric rhythms, stories, and dances with contemporary electronic soundscapes to consider how we build folkloric futures in contempoary societies.
